Anil Cassirer weighs in on all those supercuts of his films, and Oscar season.

We caught up with the writer/director at the Toronto Film Festival last month and got a chance to catch up with him about the latest supercut frenzy surrounding his films, his thoughts on Oscar season and what's next for him.

On all the supercuts: It's flattering, it's really cool. I mean, you ask why people do it and it's really... I mean I don't presume to know anyone's intentions 100% but I think it's a really normal creative impulse to play with stuff that you recognize and that's available. It's like when I put music in my films, I do it because I like seeing it in a new context and seeing what it adds to the process, and because I just like it. I don't know, it's really brought to light all the stuff that I do that's very similar, even things that I may have overlooked, or lines I may not have drawn between certain shots.

On Oscar season: It's so far away! It's impossible to tell right now, but I mean, I think a lot of films I've seen stand a great chance at nominations. I haven't even... I mean we're not even in press-crunch time, but I kind of like when all the screeners arrive and you're organizing and watching and making decisions. I'm not going to name any names because I don't want to be the guy counting chickens before they hatch, but I'm excited to see what happens, all the heavy contenders are starting to show up in theaters right now, so I'm just going to commit to buying movie tickets and waiting for the screeners to land in my mailbox.

On what's next for him: I'm taking a little time to myself but I'm writing. I started working on something in the animated vein, but it got a little too dark for a kid-friendly audience, so we're re-evaluating it. Right now I'm just enjoying the ride. We did Moonrise and Grand Budapest almost back to back, so I think I'm just now starting to recover from all of that.

this modest ding dong doesn't seem to understand that grand budapest hotel is still in the running for at least SOME oscar categories, but deadline's hosting the contenders series on 11/1 and grand budapest is scheduled to screen. someone's rooting for you bb! even if it is fox searchlight. let's also talk about how this bamf director outed himself like, a year ago, and we still haven't gotten confirmed cassihurst sightings. i am disappointed in ontd.
